paperless-ngx | v3.0.0

paperless-ngx v3.0.0 released on 22-07-2026

paperless-ngx v3.0.0 is out now. It introduces a major platform shift — a new search backend and AI/embedding features alongside several breaking changes that require admin intervention.

Administrators and integrators should read the v3 migration documentation and the full release notes on the project’s GitHub before upgrading.

What’s in this release

  • Search backend swapped: Whoosh has been replaced by Tantivy and all text search/unified indexing now use Tantivy (expect index rebuilds and compatibility fixes for Whoosh-style queries).
  • Paperless AI and embedding platform: LLM-based suggestions, RAG/LLM chat, configurable chunk/timeout and language controls, improved embedding handling, Ollama embeddings support and experimentation with vector stores (sqlite-vec / LanceDB in beta).
  • Several breaking changes and feature removals, including removal of API v1 (API v9+ required), end of Python 3.10 support, removal of document and thumbnail encryption, removal of pybzar barcode reader, and simplification of the consumer subsystem and pre/post consume script arguments.

Upgrade notes

  • Breaking changes require preparation: read the updated v3 migration docs, update any custom scripts and consumer configuration (positional arguments were removed), rebuild or migrate search/AI indices and adjust external integrations to target API v9+.
  • Test on a staging instance first: rebuild or migrate search and AI indices, review LLM/backend settings and limits, then validate workflows and performance before migrating production.

Share your experience and any upgrade notes with the community — report issues or post tips on the project’s GitHub and community channels so others can learn from the migration.
